Soul Sundays ( http://www.soulsundays.com/ ) @ Arsimona ( http://www.arsimonalounge.com/ ), 561 11th Street, 2nd floor, Oakland. 7 pm - 1:30 am (though the crowd is light until ~9pm). $5 before 10 pm, $10 after. 21 and older.
Soul Sundays is the weekly dance night of the local Chicago Style Steppers at the Arsimona nightclub in Oakland. All West Coast Swing dancers (21 and older) are warmly welcomed to join this Sunday evening swing dance crowd in dancing to DJ'd contemporary and classic soul and R&B music.
The entrance to Arsimona is on the Clay Street side - look for the red carpet. Free street parking is often available on 10th, Jefferson, or 11th Street; and there is also a pay lot off of 11th Street.
The Sunday night crowd tends to be over 35 in age. Though some patrons dress casually, most of the Steppers dress up - including some really sharp looking suits and fedoras on the guys. Ear plugs are recommended. The floor is painted wood (though the paint is worn off in the regular dance area), so suede soles will work, but hard-leather soles afford easier movement and protection against the occasional glass shard left over from the Friday and Saturday night crowds. (Also, since the Steppers wear hard-leather soles, they put baby powder on the floor; and that cakes on suede soles.)
Chicago Style Stepping ( http://steppersonly.com/ ) is a syncopated version of Bop (Jitterbug) done to Soul and R&B music, and is a close cousin of DC Hand Dancing. The basic pattern for "old school Steppin" is essentially the East Coast Swing basic pattern (double, triple, triple); the "new school" basic pattern is still a 6-count pattern, but it uses syncopated triples in a V-shaped motion: double, syncopated triple, syncopated triple: step side on 1, step forward on 2, step back on &, step side on 3, step forward on 4, step side on &, step side on 5, step side on 6... which means that while the follower starts on 1 with a weight change to the right foot, the first step forward is on the 2 with a weight change to the left foot. The leader dances mirror image to the follower - stepping forward on the right foot on 2, and forward on the left foot on 4. A WCS follower keeping time with the music and maintaining good connection should have no problem following a Stepper's lead - though each will be doing a different basic. Likewise, a WCS leader dancing with the music and providing clear signals should have no problem leading a Stepper follower.
Details: Beginning lesson 8-9 PM, All-level lesson 9-10 PM, dancing 10 PM-2 AM (or thereabouts).
----------
You mean "Blues" is a dance? Yes, it is. In fact, it is an entire family of several dances (such as the "Slow Drag" and the "Fishtail") that are aesthetically, culturally and musically connected.
Like Swing dance, Blues dance originated and evolved from African rhythms and movements. However, Blues dancing was never widely practiced as a "social" or performance dance in the United States outside of the Black communities; so it developed and thrived in smoky juke joints and at Blues house parties and rent parties, giving it a more intimate feel.
Blues dance is strongly tied to Blues music, and many aspects of Blues dancing (for example, call and response, emotional intensity, and tension and release) are directly related to the music to which it is danced. There are many types of Blues music (rural, urban, up-tempo, slow, electric, delta, modern), and also many types of Blues dance, all with very different nuances and emotions.
(the preceding description lifted from www.blues-dance.com)
----------
While the contemporary Blues dance scene was based in, and still has strong linkages to the Lindy community, Friday Night Blues also draws Tango, WCS, Salsa, Ballroom, and other types of dancers. Much of the music will be familiar as blues also played for WCS, but the music played also goes back all the way to Delta Blues and New Orleans Jazz, as well as some traditional R&B, swing and soul music (but if you insist on dancing to hip-hop and "contemporary" music, Blues dancing is not for you). FNB is fortunate to have a dedicated, knowledgeable, and nationally respected staff of DJs.
The dancers average younger than the WCS crowd, mostly 20s and 30s, across a very broad skill range, and are a friendly group. Much of the dancing is done in closed position but more open, WCS-like blues styles are common, and many of the dancers are also Lindy dancers whom we can get along well with.
Note: FNB is normally at Studio Gracia, but will be elsewhere on November 14th - check the website!

Damone Hodges of Steppers Only invites all smooth swing dancers to the last-Saturday-of-the-month afternoon Steppin dance party, 2 - 6pm at Club Anton's, 428 3rd St, Oakland - one block from Jack London Square. The cost is $10 before 4pm, $15 after. Arrive at 2pm to learn the basic Steppin 6-beat pattern. 21 and over only (since Anton's is a night club and the bar will be open). Damone will be spinning mostly R&B and Soul tunes, but if you have some favorite funk or smooth blues bring them and he'll play them. Anton's has a glossy painted wood floor so wear your hard leather soled shoes. Look on Franklin and Webster Streets for parking; the neighborhood is produce wholesalers, so though gritty it's reasonably safe.
Chicago Style Steppin is a swing variant which evolved from Jitterbug and Bop to match the smooth loopings of R&B and Soul music, and is a close cousin of DC Hand Dancing. Old School Steppin is essentially slotted East Coast Swing with the double rhythm done across instead of down the slot ("rock-side" instead of "rock-back"); New School Steppin is a side-front double followed by two syncopated triples (and 3 4, and 5 6). The syncopated triple is key to the characteristic look of Steppin.
Steppers Only - http://www.steppersonly.com/ - is an organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and teaching the art of Chicago Style Steppin.
